Considering Facial Implants?

The best candidates for facial implants are men or women who feel that their facial proportions could be enhanced by adding volume to a specific part of the face. Patients can be of almost any age, but younger patients should be fully physically mature before considering facial implants. Candidates should be in good overall physical and mental health and have realistic expectations about their results.

There are three common facial implants that can be used to enhance the appearance:

  • Chin implants strengthen a weak chin, and are often combined with a more conservative rhinoplasty.
  • Cheek implants create higher, better defined cheekbones, and may further accentuate the results of a facelift.
  • Jaw implants help reshape the jaw for a more balanced look in the lower face.

The best facial implant results are seen in patients with sunken features due to age or who have a natural lack of definition in some areas of the face.

Planning Your Surgery

The initial step in planning your facial implant surgery is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Nein. During this time, you can discuss your goals for facial implants with Dr. Nein, as well as ask him any questions you may have regarding the surgery.

Dr. Nein will conduct a physical evaluation during your consultation and review any factors that may affect your overall results. This may include lifestyle habits, medications, your skin condition, age and any previous surgeries.

He will also explain what you can expect during the surgery itself, including placement of the incisions, anesthesia and the exact position of the implants. You will receive details regarding costs, the surgical facility, any risks involved, limitations of the procedure and the procedural steps.

Your consultation with Dr. Nein is an excellent time to ask him any questions you may have regarding facial implants. However, if you think of additional questions or concerns at another time, we are happy to help you through every step of your procedure, including preparation and recovery.

Your Recovery & Results

After your surgery, you will feel swollen and bruised with some degree of discomfort that can typically be controlled with medications. Dr. Nein will dress the area in surgical bandages and provide detailed post-operative care instructions. Depending on the exact procedure, some patients may need to stay overnight in a hospital.

Healing is different for each patient and the exact length of the healing process can vary depending on the type of procedure used. In general, swelling and bruising will gradually dissipate over the following weeks. Dr. Nein may suggest that you avoid any activities that could result in the face being jarred or bumped — such as certain sports — for several weeks after surgery.

Your facial contours should appear more balanced following your facial implant surgery, with results that can often be subtle and natural enough to enhance your appearance without giving away that you had surgery. Many more mature patients may find that facial implants help them look younger, while younger patients frequently feel more confident and attractive once they enjoy more well-defined features.
