Saline breast implants consist of an outer silicone shell that is filled with sterile salt water. This type of implant is filled after insertion, which can allow for a smaller incision and scar. Saline breast implants tend to feel firmer to the touch, and can be a good choice for those women looking for more dramatic results.
Women who typically see the best outcome from saline implants have a modest natural breast size for additional tissue coverage over the implant. In very slender women or those with little natural breast tissue coverage, saline implants may show visible ripples through the skin.
A leak or rupture in saline implants can often be detected quite quickly, as the implants deflate rapidly and the saline solution is absorbed harmlessly into the body.
The IDEAL IMPLANT® is the latest implant option available. It has been recently FDA approved, and is only available through a limited network of board-certified plastic surgeons. It is a saline-filled implant, but utilizes an innovative design that can provide women with some of the benefits of silicone implants as well.
The IDEAL IMPLANT® consists of a series of nested shells that help to create a more natural look and movement for the saline solution inside. This can reduce the rippling effect that some women notice in traditional saline implants, and also creates a feel that’s every bit as soft as silicone.
Because it’s saline-filled, the IDEAL IMPLANT® eliminates concerns about silent rupture that can occur with silicone gel implants. This type of implant can be a great choice for women looking to combine the peace of mind of saline implants with the natural look and feel of silicone.
Dr. Nein is currently one of only two plastic surgeons in Tennessee to offer the IDEAL IMPLANT®, and is the only provider of this fantastic saline implant within 200 miles of Nashville.
Silicone Gel Implants
Traditional silicone gel implants are comprised of an outer silicone shell and come pre-filled with a silicone gel that has a jelly-like texture.
Many women find that silicone implants more closely mimic the look and feel of natural breasts than traditional saline implants, although this very much depends on each woman’s unique body type and build. For very petite women, silicone gel implants may be a more suitable option than saline implants, as silicone implants are less likely to ripple.
The thicker consistency of silicone gel implants means that the implants retain their shape in the unlikely event of a breach in the outer shell. For this reason, regular MRI scans are recommended every few years to accurately identify any potential issues.
