How Tummy Tucks Vary between Men and Women

shutterstock_106912520There are many misconceptions and urban legends surrounding tummy tucks, and one of them is that they’re just for women. The truth is, men and women alike can be good candidates for this body contouring procedure, however, there are some distinct differences in tummy tucks for men versus women.

The Desired Contours Are Different

The goal of the tummy tuck is to remove excess stomach skin and improve the contours of the abdomen. However, men and women typically differ on what contours they hope to achieve. Women generally want to make the waist smaller and create an hourglass silhouette, whereas a man’s goal is usually to create a flat, athletic stomach and v-shaped abdomen, with not as much emphasis on a small waist.

Men Sometimes Recover Faster

Women are more likely to have separation in the muscles of the abdominal wall, often as a result of pregnancy, and more tightening of the stomach muscles is necessary. A tummy tuck for a man may still involve some amount of muscle tightening, but it’s generally less expensive and results in an easier recovery.

Different Supplemental Procedures

Although tummy tucks are sometimes performed as a stand-alone procedure, they’re often performed in conjunction with other procedures to deliver a better overall improvement. Because men and women usually have different areas of concern and contrasting goals with plastic surgery, the supplemental procedures they choose typically differ.

Women often include a tummy tuck as part of a mommy makeover, which addresses multiple problem areas that can result from pregnancy. In addition to a tummy tuck, women often choose to include breast augmentation, breast lift or possibly liposuction to create sexier, more feminine curves. Men having tummy tucks may choose male breast reduction or liposuction to create more masculine, athletic contours.
