Everybody Wants to be a Plastic Surgeon

This is an excerpt from the presidential address of the Opening Ceremonies of 2010 ASPS President Michael McGuire, MD :

“We’re one of the smallest specialties in medicine, we don’t ‘own’ a body part and others want to do practically everything we do – both in reconstructive as well as aesthetic plastic surgery.

While seemingly everybody wants to be a plastic surgeon, most don’t bother with the training to become a board-certified plastic surgeon and American Society of Plastic Surgeons member.

We have only survived as a specialty by doing what we do better than the competition – constantly innovating new techniques.”
